Smoking and bones (25 Leaflet Pack)

For healthy bones and for the speedy repair of broken bones,
the body needs plenty of oxygen carried in a good blood
circulation. Carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke reduces the
level of available oxygen in the blood and nicotine impedes
the free flow of the blood vessels. Smokers have less healthy
bones, and have slower healing for bone fractures. In addition
smokers have higher risk of osteoporosis later in life. Of
interest to smokers concerned for their bone health or
health professionals who want to explain the relationship of
smoking and bones (such as GPs, orthopaedic staff, sports
medicine, geriatricians and health visitors).
