A sealed jar containing the equivalent amount of phlegm as would be coughed up by smoker with lung disease or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD. Just one of many nasty effects of smoking!
The product was produced using research indicating that Sputum/Phlegm was coughed up in patients suffering from COPD induced through smoking. The amount, colour and consistency of the sputum can vary quite a lot depending on the following factors:
- Amount smoked at present and prior to onset of COPD
- The age of the smoker
- The manner in which tobacco is smoked
- The type of tobacco/cigarette etc smoked (high tar etc)
- The influence of lifestyle factors and the physical size of a person
- If the person has any medical recurrences of coughs/cold/bronchitis etc
- The genetic tendency to getting/having severe COPD
- Other pollution issues
- There are also quite a few other more minor factors that effect the level of sputum being produced.
From this list of factors it’s easy to see that a smoker that begins to develop COPD through smoking will have/will cough up Phlegm. The amount we show in our product is based on research undertaken by the American Lung Foundation. They state:
"An ounce or more of yellow mucus may be coughed up each day."
At this rate, and ounce or more per day would result in approximately 2 cups of phlegm after 2 weeks, which is the general amount depicted in the Clem's Phlegm model.
