Opportunistic stop smoking advice

How to run a stop smoking advice stall in a shopping centre or market place

Opportunistic stop smoking advice is when a health professional spends a few minutes encouraging smokers to quit. With the help of a Smokerlyzer, Tar Jar, and some leaflets, stop smoking advisors can recruit smokers using a 'Shopportunistic' approach.

Get down to a shopping area, set up a stand and you're in business! Smokerlyzers provide the magnet to attract smokers and the CO readings motivate them to quit by offering a personalised demonstration of that smoking harms their health with every puff. It also offers proof of the immediate benefits of quitting. Smokerlyzer in hand, ask passers-by if there are smokers wanting to quit. Smokers try to look nonchalant but most agree to take a CO test. Talk to the smoker about the CO reading as it offers a message of hope about the benefits of quitting. Discuss if they have made previous quit attempts.

Cecilia Farren from GASP explained, "Many smokers step away, vowing to stop smoking immediately. Others need time to think about it. Working alone in a shopping centre, I can test and talk to about 50 smokers a day. Many of these will set a quit day and if you have a phone you can make an appointment with the local stop smoking service there and then."

Supporting resources from GASP that add visual impact include: Tar in a Jar, What's in Tobacco Smoke, blocked blood vessel, Skeletal Smoker. A selection of written information helps the smoker to set out on the road to stopping. Include things for ex-smokers such as a 'Quit certificate' or 'Staying Stopped' leaflet, and for committed smokers, give them - 'Can't Quit Won't Quit'. Have leaflets dealing with specific problems such as asthma or diabetes, stress or weight gain.

Cecilia added, "'Shop-ortunistic' Stop Smoking advice can be given anywhere - shopping malls, markets, village fetes, supermarkets, music festivals and sporting events. I set up a picnic table at a May Fair and tested over 40 smokers in an afternoon. Where there are people, there are smokers wanting to stop."
GASP can set up and run stalls to recruit smokers. We can also help to suggest and provide displays, models and supporting information to have on your stall.
