| Measure lung age and motivate smokers to quit
Bedfont’s brand new LungLife™ can easily be used to detect the early signs of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and help with managing treatment. Smoking is one of the main causes of COPD, a progressive disease of the airways characterised by a gradual loss of lung function. The instrument calculates a patient’s lung age, making it an excellent motivational tool, alerting smokers to the physical damage caused by their habit – the lungs of a regular smoker will function at the same level as a much older person. From a patient’s height, age and gender, the device calculates a predicted value. It then measures the forced expiratory volume in the first second of expiration as a percentage of the predicted value (FEV1% predicted). From this, the smoker’s equivalent lung age is calculated – considerably older for a heavy smoker than their chronological age. |

| Mouthpieces and Infection Control
LungLife™ uses disposable cardboard mouthpieces that incorporate a one-way valve to prevent patients drawing air back from the monitor and reduce potential risks of cross contamination. The mouthpieces are single use only, and must be changed between patients and disposed of as soiled. Wipe the instrument surfaces with a product specifically developed for this purpose. Bedfont provides an Instrument Cleansing Wipe, which can also be used by patients to wipe their hands before handling the monitor in areas without hand washing facilities. NEVER use alcohol or cleaning agents containing alcohol or other organic solvents on the monitor. Under no circumstances should the instrument be immersed in liquid or splashed with liquid.
